Three and a half years ago I sold my small house on two acres in the country and moved into an upscale apartment complex, closer to family, groceries, no repairs, 55+, non-smoking. Years of dealing with radiation issues were over! I was sick of it – not from radiation itself but the exasperating disputes it caused. Disaster just struck. We were told all the apartments needed to be tested for radon exposure. Wow! A fuse has been lit. Boom!
Radon is what Ken Mossman, (radiation page), and other radiation professionals call a “phantom risk”. No one in this apartment complex is going to get lung cancer from radon gas in these modern, well managed units. The EPA has created a billion-dollar phantom risk. Check this:
Philip H. Abelson, PhD, (April 27, 1913 - August 1, 2004), Member of the National Academy of Science, served as the editor of the AAAS journal Science from 1962 to 1984. (The quote below from Abelson is from 1991)
“The EPA has no solid evidence that low levels of radon cause lung cancer, especially in nonsmokers.”
“Whenever a risk is identified, the EPA takes what it calls a conservative approach. This entails developing worst-case scenarios and giving credence to sloppy data if they indicate a greater risk. Experiments that later show that no risk exists are disregarded. Very rarely indeed has the EPA loosened regulations on the basis of new, valid scientific data.”
